SIJNN 2009 Release

Sijnn 2009 Release : A Sublime Vintage from an Extreme Vineyard!

2009 is considered one of the great vintages in the Western Cape and it was no different at Malgas near the mouth of the Breede River. Now our 3rd vintage from this exciting, extreme vineyard of stones and more stones – round pudding stones on the surface and slate below. We feel the vines are really starting to mature and produce serious quality fruit, even at the tender age of five.

We have also got to understand and manage the vineyard a little better.

One of our key improvements was to tip very early – before flowering – to reduce wind damage. Standard practise of later tipping – during berry enlargement – encourages an increase in berry size and compact bunches.

The advantage of smaller berries and looser bunches shows in the 2009 with greater concentration and structure. The 2009 blend is 46% Syrah; 29% Mourvédre; 13% Touriga Nacional; 6% Trincadeira and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon.

We have tweaked the label a bit to better reflect the quality in the bottle. Hope you notice and of course, we welcome any feedback – both positive and negative.e have also got to understand and manage the vineyard a little better.

SIJNN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009

We decided to leave out two barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon from our 2009 blend and offer a varietal wine of some distinction. A much lighter textured wine than our Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, expressing the stony soils and proximity to the sea.

NEXT RELEASE

We plan to have our 2012 Sijnn White and 2011 barrel fermented Rosé (renamed Saignée) ready for release in January 2013.

Kind regards,

David, Waldo and the Sijnn team.
